The corporate governance code issued by the country’s Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRC) which caused the exit of Pastor Enoch Adeboye as the national overseer Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has been suspended by the Nigerian government.

A statement issued by the Minister for Industry, Trade and Investment, Okechuckwu Enelamah, said the code stood suspended pending its review and consultation with stakeholders, Premium Times reports.

The statement was issued following the sack of Jim Obazee as the executive secretary of FRC.

Adeboye had on Saturday stepped down as the national overseer of RCCG in compliance with the suspended FRC governance code which stipulated that non-profit organizations would not head governance of their organisations for more than 20 years, and could not also pass baton to their family members.

This development quickly sparked mixed reactions as the government was accused targeting churches.

Adeboye accused the federal government of meddling in church matters. According to him, the government has been showing increasing interest in church affairs, especially against the RCCG and other fresh laws had been enacted by the government to ruffle the feathers of the church.

  1. great news- where in the bible did it say that a Priest should retire? With El Rufai and Bunari’s mess in Southern Kaduna I am glad this was nipped in the bud-

  2. This is really a controversial issue. True the state has no right to meddle in religious affairs, but one the flip side the religious bodies are to comply with the laws of the land in which they are located.

  3. Yeah I feel you bro. But you need to understand that Nigeria is a very religious country and as we know religion breeds sentiments.

  4. Anyway sentiments or not I think there should be a limit to governments interference in religious matters otherwise soon churches would need government permits before they ordain their own ministers and Pastors. Maybe even political parties in church. Just saying.

  5. The church should be left alone to handle its leadership issues. Only when crimes are being committed should the govt step in

  6. I think the FRC should be more concern with the age limit of those in offices than in the church, the service of a priest is for a life time with or without portfolio. Am force to believe with recent developments that the fight is against the Church

  7. The church is a non government organization so is the mosque, federal government should stop poking it’s nose where it shouldn’t and address the economy melt down at hand, besides the general overseer did NOTretire he only passed on the mantle of anointing to another.

  8. It is true that the Church is called to work hand in hand with the government but the latter should not try in any way to control the Church. This because the Church has its own automomy and authority. Nigerian government does things anyhow and in very sense. Instead of arranging her economy they are there following up the church.
